Five More to Watch

Poland at Beaver Local

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Beaver Local High Stadium

Watch to watch for: This is the first game in the All-American Conference’s Red Division. The Bulldogs are 2-0 with impressive wins over Hubbard and Parma Normandy, while the Beavers edged East Liverpool before falling to West Branch. A matchup to watch will be the Beavers’ running game (271 ypg) vs. Poland’s run defense (165.5 ypg).

Campbell at Liberty

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Liberty High Stadium

What to watch for: No surprise here — can anyone slow the Leopards’ running game, which has averaged 321 yards per game in victories over Brookfield and Niles. Fitzgerald Toussaint is averaging 11 yards per carry, and last week Campbell allowed Lakeview to rush for 193 yards.

Jackson-Milton at United

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: United High Stadium

What to watch for: The Bluejays are 2-0 for the first time since the late ’80s, but they’ll get tested by a United team that still has some question marks. Jackson-Milton’s Wilbur Wilson has had two good games so far, but United pitched a shutout at Salem last week and got the early advantage thanks to some turnovers. Lingering over the Golden Eagles, though, is the 47-0 loss at Minerva in Week 1.

Mathews at Leetonia

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Leetonia High Stadium

What to watch for: Last year Mathews unleased an explosive offensive running game that resulted in a 10-0 regular season and the East Suburban Conference championship. This season the Mustangs haven’t been as productive on either side of the ball and are 0-2. Leetonia, meanwhile, came up with what could be its signature win of the season, a 19-6 victory at Columbiana.

Springfield at Lowellville

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Lowellville High Stadium

What to watch for: The Tigers have already equaled their win total of last year with victories over Struthers and Youngstown Christian. Springfield has shown a nice balance offensively and QB Matt Evans is completing more than 60 percent of his passes, usually to wideout Jim Zubick. Lowellville is 0-2 with losses to Malvern and Woodridge.
