AAC ROUNDUP: Girard beats Campbell; Lakeview beats Struthers; Newton Falls beats Champion; Beaver Local beats Salem; LaBrae beats Brookfield
CAMPBELL — With standout running back Kyle Stadelmyer playing only a very limited role as punter, Girard buzzed to its eighth straight victory, 34-13, over Campbell Memorial Friday night.
Junior Raymond Byrd ran the ball the most for the Indians (8-0, 4-0 All-American Conference Blue Tier) by gaining 177 yards on 26 carries.
Freshman quarterback Dan Graziano threw for 228 yards in the air on 12 of 17. Junior Dominic Morgan had two catches for 69 yards.
Graziano passed for two touchdowns and also ran for a pair.
Campbell went up 7-0, and then 13-7 before Landon Smith caught a 34-yard pass from Graziano. Ryan Kirkpatrick’s PAT put the Indians ahead for good, 14-13.
When defensive end Carlo Eggleston was credited with recovering a block punt in Campbell’s end zone right before halftime, the game’s momentum quickly swung in favor of Girard.
Campbell, devoid of sustained drives, also lost three fumbles to hurt its cause.
However, the Red Devils (2-6, 0-4) scored big plays such as Darrio Bivens’ 53-yard run and Rich Bledsoe’s 77-yard TD catch from Lester Hughes.
The Indians held Campbell to 116 yards passing and 87 rushing. The Red Devils had only one first down after halftime.
Newton Falls 20, Champion 19 (OT)
NEWTON FALLS — Eric Kline had five receptions for 92 yards for the Tigers.
Derek Sumner and Tommy Stroup also had touchdowns for Champion (3-5, 1-3 Blue Tier). Sumner’s came on a 64-yard pass from Bill Yartz, while Stroup’s tally was a 1-yard run.
Lakeview 27, Struthers 6
STRUTHERS — Ben Moody scored on a 1-yard run and he threw touchdown pass of 61 yards to Anthony Franko and 65 to Jarred Clark helping the Bulldogs (4-3) build a 27-0 lead.
Joe Balog, who gained 128 yards on 28 carries scored a touchdown for the Wildcats (1-6) in the fourth quarter. Struthers’ Tony Valiquette conneted on 14 of 23 passes for 163 yards.
Beaver Local 31, Salem 14
LISBON — The Beavers (2-6, 1-4 AAC Red) held a 17-0 lead at intermission and the winless Quakers (0-8, 0-5) couldn’t recover.
Beaver Local’s Brandon Bussard rushed for 163 yards on 23 carries, which included touchdown runs of 28, 10 and 10 yards.
Salem’s Trent Toothman connected on 12 of 19 passes for 203 yards. Phil Bennett caught four of those passes for 92.
LaBrae 60, Brookfield 8
BROOKFIELD — LaBrae gained 342 total yards on the night, with 73 of them coming courtesy of running back Colten Hill.
Hill scored on a 44-yard run in the second quarter and the Vikings led 24-0 entering the half. Quarterback Jordan Miller completed 2-of-3 passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike was caught by Steve Woodyard.
The Warriors weren’t able to muster much offense — 110 total yards.
Running back Denny Sulick provided the only real spark for Brookfield, amassing 70 yards on 10 carries. He scored the only touchdown for Brookfield. Quarterback Matt Palumbo connected with Stephen Shaw for the two-point conversion.
