The Bulldogs used a balanced attack behind strong blocking to post their second win.
CAMPBELL — Ben Moody, Jesse Bradley and Clint Hess each rushed for two touchdowns as the Lakeview Bulldogs raced to a 42-19 victory over the Campbell Memorial Red Devils in Friday at John Knapick Field.
“It’s early in the season and we’re still a young football team, but we’re experienced at positions [especially quarterback] where we need to be in order to execute and that really helps,” said Lakeview coach Tom Pavlansky.
“What we need to do right now, however, is get everyone on the same page.”
An area where everyone seems to be on the same page is the offensive line which paved the way for six rushing touchdowns and 277 total offensive yards against the Red Devils.
Moody, who also racked up 81 yards to go along with his two tallies, kick-started the Bulldogs’ offense just 1:40 into the game when he penetrated the Red Devil defense from 22 yards out for the early 7-0 advantage.
When Hess added the first of his scores from a yard out (6:24) and Moody found the end zone from 27 yards away (:03) for his second score of the period, it enabled the Bulldogs to build a 21-0 advantage.
“Give all the credit to my offensive line tonight because without them, we don’t move the ball a single inch,” said Moody. “They’re always coming back to the huddle to talk about what they might have open their way and it usually works.
“We knew that Campbell Memorial would be a tough opponent and they were. By no means were we going to take them lightly,” he added.
The Red Devils finally got on the board at the 7:48 mark of the second period when Alex Lopez caught an 11-yard scoring strike from signal-caller Lester Hughes.
A botched placement, however, left the score at 21-6 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Lakeview was far from finished in the opening half offensively, as Bradley rushed into the end zone from 15 yards away at 5:20, and Hess then added his second tally from 6 yards out at 1:22 which allowed the Bulldogs to forge a 35-6 margin at intermission.
Jeff Bayuk, the Red Devils’ second-year coach, was impressed both with the Bulldogs and portions of his team’s play.
“We had a 12-play drive that resulted in our first touchdown against a team that I believe is playoff bound. That happened because we didn’t make any mental mistakes,” Bayuk said.
“I saw a team tonight where they should be in the weight room, and another that’s a couple of years behind. We start six or seven sophomores and have just two or three seniors on either side of the ball.
“Give Lakeview all of the credit. We knew [Ben] Moody was an excellent runner and hard to stop, but knowing that and then stopping him are two different things,” Bayuk added.
Bradley’s 2-yard run at 8:06 of the third period then upped the margin to 42-6 in favor of the Bulldogs (2-0).
Campbell Memorial (1-1) rounded out the scoring in the final frame when Jalil Turner scored from two yards away barely two minutes into the quarter, and quarterback Nick Opencar added a 5-yard scamper with 4:46 remaining.
The Red Devils actually rushed for more yards than the Bulldogs, 201-193 with Derek Carter registering a game high 85 yards for Campbell Memorial.
