VICTORIES: Campbell, Niles, Champion, Newton Falls, Lakeview, Beaver Local all win
Niles suffered a 14-3 setback against Cleveland John Adams.
TORONTO — Lester Hughes passed for two touchdowns — one each to David Benedis and Darrio Bivens — and Jalil Turner scored twice via 3-yard and 2-yard runs, to lead Campbell Memorial High to a 28-14 win over Toronto Friday night.
Turner’s 10 rushes totaled 31 yards for the Red Devils, whose quarterback, Hughes, completed 10 of 15 for 100 yards.
Alex Lopez kicked two PATs for Campbell, which scored seven points in each of the four quarters to stay ahead of Toronto.
John Adams 14, Niles 3
NILES — Terrell Clements rushed for 107 yards and scored a touchdown to lead Cleveland John Adams at Bo Rein Stadium.
The Red Dragons were held to a 110 total yards and turned the ball over five times, including four interceptions. John Adams scored first on a 6-yard run by Austin Ascew with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter to make it 8-0.
The Red Dragons made it 8-3 on a 42-yard field goal by Nick Liste with two seconds remaining until halftime. Clements’ touchdown came with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter.
Zak Stanton led Niles with 28 yards on 11 carries, while Reggie Wells added 26 yards on eight attempts.
Champion 20, Ashtabula Edgewood 17
ASHTABULA — Champion High School rallied with five minutes remaining in the game as Chris Nicopolis, capped a 5-play drive to score on a 1-yard run.
The Warriors held a 14-7 lead at halftime, but the Golden Flashes bounced back to tie it in the third quarter, only to have Edgewood go ahead 17-14 with 9:41 remaining in the final quarter.
Zack Hayslett, who scored on a 4-yard run for Champion in the third quarter, gained 98 yards on 16 rushes, while Nicopolis finished with 66 on 16 attempts.
Newton Falls 42, Rittman 13
NEWTON FALLS — The Tigers built a 35-13 halftime lead in cruising to the victory. Eric Kline, who scored on runs of 55 and 45 yards, led the Tiger attack with 125 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Brian Sole rushed for 116 yards on 11 attempts. He also completed six of 11 passes for 86 yards and two TDs, scored on a 1-yard run and ran in a two-point conversion.
Lakeview 34, Painesville Harvey 20
CORTLAND — Lakeview had 391 yards, including 243 on the ground, in a game of Division III teams.
Ben Moody had 123 yards on 15 carries for Lakeview, which had 44 rushing plays to 22 for Harvey (0-1).
Senior Jarred Clark scored twice, once on a 61-yard punt return and once on an 18-yard pass play from twin brother Justin Clark, who completed 7 of 13 passes for 148 yards.
Beaver Local 29, East Liverpool 22
EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool’s Travis Coon’s 27-yard touchdown run and John Baker’s PAT put East Liverpool ahead, 22-14, with 7:48 remaining in the third quarter, but Beaver Local battled back to win.
Dustin Sprouse’s 17-yard run with 2:43 remaining in the third capped a 10-play, 70- yard drive that took over five minutes before senior quarterback Shawn Mercer tied the game, 22-22, on a conversion scamper.
Beaver Local took the lead for good following a 76-yard 12-play drive when Mercer plunged 1 yard with 7:43 remaining.
