Mooney extends poll lead; Range No. 3 in D5

Cardinal Mooney High extended its lead in the Associated Press’ Division IV state-wide football poll, leading a group of 12 area schools receiving votes this week.

Mooney (5-0) which plays Buffalo (N.Y.) St. Francis Friday, received 34 first-place votes and 368 points to outdistance No. 2 Steubenville by nearly 100 points.

In Div. V, unbeaten South Range received two first-place votes and 247 points to place third, behind Maria Stein Marion Local and Findlay Liberty-Benton.

Ursuline (4-1) is seventh-ranked in Div. V, while unbeatens Mineral Ridge is tied for 20th and Mathews is 22nd.

Three teams earned votes in Div. VI, but not enough to make the top 10. McDonald (5-0) is tied for 18th, Warren JFK (3-2) is 20th and Columbiana (4-1) is 21st.

Howland (5-0) received one first-place vote and 154 points to reach No. 6 in Div. II, while Canfield (4-1), whose lone loss was to the Tigers in week 4, is No. 8.

And in Div. III, West Branch (4-1) slipped from No. 5 to No. 9 after losing to Louisville last Friday, and Niles (4-1) is tied for No. 16.
