CAMPBELL — Campbell High football coach Jeff Bayuk got his first win with his new school and it was pretty refreshing.
Red Devil kicker Ryan Lopez made a 27-yard field goal with 13 seconds left to lift Campbell to an 18-15 win over East Liverpool in a Metro Athletic Conference game on Friday.
The win snapped a 17-game losing streak for the Red Devils, who gave Bayuk a postgame Gatorade shower.
“They were so excited,” said Bayuk. “It was worth it.”
Maurice Kerns scored two touchdowns for Campbell (1-3, 1-0), which took 15-0 lead late in the third quarter. John Turner had 88 yard rushing and Darrio Bivens added 80, while David Glenn and Vince Simon each blocked a punt for the Red Devils.
Brandon Edison rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown and Denny Ours added 48 and the game-tying score with just under two minutes left for the Potters (0-4, 0-1).
East 16, Eastlake North 8
EASTLAKE — East took a 16-0 lead, then battled injuries and hung on before a goal-line stand sealed the Panthers’ victory.
Senior wide receiver Jeff Purdie caught an 81-yard pass from Sal Battles to set up East’s first touchdown by senior fullback Ray Catley.
Catley’s run was from 3 yards out and Roncarlos Hilton’s conversion run gave the Panthers an 8-0 lead that increased to 10-0 when junior outside linebacker Chris West tackled Eastlake North’s punter in the end zone with nine minutes remaining before halftime.
Junior tailback Anthony Robinson scored East’s other TD on a 52-yard run.
Battles injured his throwing hand and was replaced by Hilton, a junior, in the second half.
Eastlake scored with 4:40 when Brian Swilley ran in from 10 yards out.
With 1:50 remaining, East stopped Eastlake on the Panthers’ 2-yard line. After a 1-yard gain, Eastlake got stuffed behind the line of scrimmage by a defense led by tackle Luis Charriez and Maurice Harris.
