Mineral Ridge blanks Grand Valley


South Range also won easily on the road while Crestview lost at home to Marlington.

ORWELL — A.J. Zitello rushed 18 times for 242 yards and three touchdowns Friday to lead the Mineral Ridge High football team to a 64-0 victory over Grand Valley.

Zitello’s touchdown runs covered 62, 3 and 5 yards for the Rams (2-0).

Quarterback Zach Kiger completed five of six passes for 63 yards, including a 20-yard score to Ken Mazurkiewicz.

Also scoring touchdowns were Joey Miller (5 yards), Jon McRoberts (40 yards), Dan Skiba (2 yards), Tom Cross (5 yards) and Mike Keleman (16 yards).

Phil Ciavarella booted a 26-yard field goal.

Grand Valley drops to 0-2 after being limited to 15 yards rushing on 23 tries.

Independence 7

INDEPENDENCE — Steve Bensinger’s 85-yard return of the opening kickoff set the tone for the Raiders (2-0).

Bensinger caught touchdown passes of 23 and 10 yards from quarterback Jack Dawson and scored on a 1-yard run.

Bensinger carried the ball six times for 66 yards.

Dawson rushed nine times for 61 yards while Chris Novak gained 61 yards on four carries.

The Raiders outrushed the Blue Devils (1-1), 329-132.

Lisbon 16,
Southern 15

LISBON — Lisbon rallied from a 15-7 halftime deficit to upend the Indians.

The Blue Devils (1-1) rolled up 273 yards, including 117 on the ground, and got a third-quarter safety to help put them over the top.

Southern (0-2) had 199 yards, including 195 on the ground.

Marlington 28,
Crestview 14

COLUMBIANA — Marlington opened a 28-0 lead after three quarters and held on for the non-league win.

Corey Hill caught four passes for 124 yards and a TD and also ran for a score to lead the Rebels (1-1), who managed just 63 yards rushing. Keith Drewnoski ran 10 times for 37 yards. Tony Britton completed 7 of 25 passes for 162 yards and three interceptions.

Quinton Howard ran 24 times for 98 yards to lead the Dukes (2-0), who overcame three fumbles.

LaBrae 37,
East Palestine 20

EAST PALESTINE — Cameron Truss rushed 27 times for 241 yards to lead the Vikings.

Truss scored on runs of 63, 32 and 51 yards.

For the Bulldogs, Dalton Cope returned a kickoff 66 yards for a score. He also ran the ball in from the 5.

Tommy Powers scored East Palestine’s other touchdown on a 5-yard run and gained 87 yards on four carries.
