McNeely leads Warriors 28-14


Mathews and Champion stayed unbeaten while
Southeast got its first win.

LISBON — Steve McNeely threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, setting a couple of school records in the process, as West Branch remained unbeaten with a 28-14 victory over Beaver Local Friday night.

McNeely completed 13-of-20 passes for 293 yards and scoring tosses to Jeremiah Jones and Chad Butcher in the second quarter; the latter gave the Warriors (2-0) a 21-8 lead at halftime.

McNeely also had a team-high 54 yards rushing in 18 carries, including a 37-yard scoring scamper that gave West Branch a 7-0 lead.

McNeely broke the school record for career completions (the old mark was 264 by John Common from 1974-76), and tied Jeff Morris’ career record for TD passes (38). Morris played from 1992-94.

Corey Catania also scored for the Warriors, a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. James had four catches for 101 yards.

Beaver Local’s Ethan Russell had 186 yards rushing on 28 carries and passed for 78 yards.

He scored both touchdowns for the Beavers (1-1) on runs of 1 and 37 yards.

VIENNA — Brad Hughes ran 14 times for 105 yards and a touchdown and Eric Ocheltree added 83 yards on 17 carries with a score as the Mustangs (2-0, 1-0) held on for an East Suburban Conference victory.

Leading 14-8 late in the fourth, Hughes caught a touchdown pass from Lucas Buckner to put the game away.

The Mustangs forced three turnovers with Ocheltree, Phil Ciprian and Jake Swank catching interceptions.

GARRETTSVILLE — Joe Cvengros passed for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead Champion.

Cvengros completed 6 of 11 tosses. Markel Vaughn caught four of them for 131 yards, including a 68-yard scoring reception in the third quarter.

Nicholas Madarek (20 yards) and Ken Von Bergen (24 yards) caught the other touchdown passes in the second quarter.

Kris Wildman led the Golden Flashes (2-0) with 101 yards rushing on 16 carries. One was a 14-yard touchdown.

Newton Falls 0

RAVENNA — Chad Eatinger rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and Taylor Simyak added two rushing touchdowns and passed for another to lead Southeast (1-1).
