Ursuline rallies for 33-30 victory in OT


The Irish solidified their playoff position by defeating Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

AKRON — Darrell Mason scored a 3-yard touchdown in the first overtime to lift the Ursuline High football team to a 33-30 victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in a non-league game Friday.

Ursuline held SVSM to a field goal in the first part of overtime.

Mason, who ran 17 times for 58 yards and three TDs, scored the game-tying touchdown with 23 seconds left in regulation, but SVSM blocked the extra point to force overtime.

Ursuline senior quarterback Lamar McQueen completed 8 of 18 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns for Ursuline (8-2), which clinched a spot in the Division V playoffs and may have earned a home game in the process.

Carnell Evans had 18 carries for 77 yards to lead SVSM (8-2), which also lost to Mooney.

Columbus Watterson 0

COLUMBUS — Seniors Michael Zordich and Dan McCarthy each scored two touchdowns and the Cardinals’ defense stuffed Watterson as Mooney clinched its second straight undefeated regular season.

Zordich, a Penn State recruit, scored on runs of 12 and 45 yards, while McCarthy, a Notre Dame recruit, had scoring runs of 18 and 68 yards for the Cardinals (10-0), who already secured the top spot in Division IV, Region 13.

Mooney led 14-0 at halftime. The Cardinals, who have won two of the last three Div. IV state titles, have won 24 straight games.

Ledgemont 31

CANFIELD — Randy Triplett threw five touchdown passes including the 44-yard game winner to Victor Shaw with 18 seconds remaining.

Triplett completed 14 of 24 tosses for 208 yards. He also rushed 19 times for 154 yards.

Ed Gonda caught seven passes for 127 yards including three scores. Toba Olarewaju ran for a 16-yard touchdown.

Youngstown Christian finished at 6-3, 4-2 in the East Suburban Conference. Ledgemont is 4-6, 3-3.

Mathews 47,
Pymatuning Valley 19

ANDOVER — Three Mustangs surpassed 160 yards in rushing as Mathews won to earn a DivisionV Region 17 playoff berth.

Eric Ocheltree led the Mustangs with 197 yards on 15 carries and three scores. Brad Hughes rushed for 180 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns.

Brent Jackson gained 161 yards on 18 carries.

West Branch 28,
Marlington 21

BELOIT — Warriors quarterback Steve McNeely passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

Jase Uyselt caught 3- and 12-yard scoring tosses. Jeremiah James hauled in a McNeely pass for an 85-yard score for the Warriors (8-2, 5-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference). West Branch earned a Division III, Region 9 playoff berth.

University 14, OT

WARREN — Jared Province scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Eagles (8-2).

Province, who rushed for 145 yards, has 31 touchdowns this season.

JFK is expected to get a home game in the first round of the Division VI playoffs.

JFK quarterback Dominic LaPolla rushed for 40 yards and completed 10 of 20 passes for 147 yards.

Weir 6

LISBON — All of the points in the game were scored in the second quarter with Weir jumping out to a 6-0 lead when Brian Davidson caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Steven Buffo with 11 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the half.

Quarterback Devon Ludwig was involved in the next four scores for the Beavers (3-7) as he scored on 61 and 1 yards runs and connected with Ben Adkins for 79 and 49-yard TD passes.

Ludwig rushed 11 times for 112 yards and he was 3 of 6 passing for 145.

Southeast 41,
Crestwood 10

RAVENNA — Chad Eatingter rushed for 125 yards on 21 carries, which included touchdown runs of 12, 2, 1 and 1 yards for the Pirates (6-4, 5-2 Portage Trail Conference).

The Pirates scored 14 points in each of the first and second quarters and 13 more in the fourth period.

Southeast had 194 rushing and 125 passing, while holding Crestwood to 105 rushing and 64 passing.
