Phillis-to-Sluss strike nets United win


The 27-yard pass connection with 42 seconds left sank Lisbon, 33-26.

LISBON — Jimmy Phillis found Eric Sluss in the end zone with a 27-yard scoring pass with 42 seconds remaining, to give United High a 33-26 victory over Lisbon Friday night in an Inter Tri-County League Tier One game at War Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Eagles (4-4, 2-3) led the entire game before Lisbon (2-6, 0-5) rallied in the fourth quarter, tying the score at 26-26 on a 10-yard pass to Glenn McMillan with 1:24 remaining in the game.

Sluss also scored two rushing touchdowns, from 12 and 40 yards. Eric Saksa and Josh Hartenstein also scored TDs for the Eagles, who led 20-7 at halftime.

Sluss gained 90 yards on just six carries, and caught four passes for 48 yards. Hartenstein added 70 yards on 16 carries.

Dana Rose rushed for two scores and passed for a third for Lisbon. He finished with 87 yards on 25 carries, and was 7-of-22 through the air for 73 yards.

East Palestine 7

MINERAL RIDGE — The Rams (7-1, 4-1 ITCL Tier One) scored three touchdowns in the span of 40 seconds in the second quarter.

Mineral Ridge led 8-0 before A.J. Zitello scored the first of his four touchdowns with 11:53 remaining in the second period. Thirteen seconds later, Zitello scored again, this time from 21 yards out. The extra point following both scores failed, giving the Rams a 20-0 lead.

Finally, Mineral Ridge’s Joey Miller passed 30 yards to Ken Mazurkiewicz for a touchdown with 11:13 remaining, and Phil Ciavarella’s kick made it 27-0. The Rams added two more scores before halftime, a 12-yard pass from Zach Kiger to Mazurkiewicz, and a 14-yard run by Zitello, who finished with 213 yards on 24 carries.

Shane Peterson rushed 11 times for 94 yards to lead East Palestine (3-5, 1-4), and he completed 7-of-25 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown to Nick Baiamonte in the fourth quarter. Baiamonte had 52 yards on five receptions.

Ciavarella kicked four extra points and had an interception.

NEW WATERFORD — The Rebels, behind 14-0 at halftime, rallied to score two touchdowns in the third quarter and two more in the fourth quarter.

Tony Britton and Corey Hill tallied on 64 and 1-yard runs for the Rebels (5-3, 3-2 ITCL Tier One) in the third quarter.

Jakov Leon caught a 24-yard TD strike from Britton and Keith Drewnoski scored on a 1-yard run for the Rebels in the fourth period.

Britton gained 177 yards on 18 carries and Hill picked up 131 on 25 tries.

Nick Schuler gave the Tigers (1-7, 1-4) the lead in the first quarter when he scored on 1-yard run. He finished with 16 yards on nine rushes.

He also connected on 21 of 39 passes for 344 yards, which included a TD strike of 57 yards to Ron Snyder in the second quarter.
