Anderson claims Division II crown

Daniel Rod led the way in a 31-25 win over Louisville.

MASSILLON (AP) — Daniel Rod passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Cincinnati Anderson to a 31-25 win over Louisville in the Division II championship game at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium Friday night.

Neal Seaman threw touchdown passes of 14, 4 and 3 yards to Brandon Mathie and 19 yards to Bob Swigert for Louisville, which got within 24-19 before Elijah Storey’s 67-yard run with 2:44 to play appeared to put it out of reach at 31-19.

But Seaman found Swigert in the end zone with 20 seconds left to pull the Leopards back within six. Louisville’s onside kick was recovered by Anderson at midfield.

Rod connected with Nick Truesdell for touchdowns of 52 and 20 yards as Anderson (13-2) built a 17-point lead in their first trip to the state title game.

The junior completed 12 of 19 passes for 203 yards.

Truesdell, a 6-foot-7 senior who had only 31 catches for 582 yards and seven touchdowns coming in, grabbed five passes for 129 yards.

Meanwhile, senior Nick Aylward roamed all over the field to make tackles on defense and stopped a Louisville drive with an interception at his own 2 in the first half.

After Truesdell’s two touchdowns in the first quarter, Rod scampered 3 yards around left end to cap a six-play, 60-yard drive in the second quarter that made it 21-0.

Louisville (12-3) came right back with a five-play, 62-yard drive, scoring on a 14-yard pass to Mathie.

Truesdell returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards to the Louisville 35, setting up a 19-yard field goal by John Howard on the final play of the first half for a 24-7 lead.

Seaman passed 4 yards to Mathie with 2:58 left in the third quarter to cut it to 24-13.

Mathie’s extra-point kick attempt was blocked.

Seaman drove the Leopards 80 yards in 13 plays to get Louisville within 24-19 with 2:57 to play, but the two-point conversion pass was incomplete.

Seaman completed 29 of 45 passes for 283 yards, finishing the season with 29 touchdown passes.

Mathie had 11 catches for 120 yards for Louisville, in the playoffs for the 11th time but making its first title game appearance.

The Leopards had a 10-game winning streak snapped.

They started the season 2-2, with both losses by one point.
