"There goes Youngstown again" is a cry that many have made and want to continue to make following Sunday's shooting at an off-campus YSU student party.

But read below the list of tragic and outrageous incidents that have made news in recent weeks, and none of them involve Youngstown.

All are tragic, as is the city's incident and the death of Jamail Johnson. But we are part of a society problem. It's not simply a Youngstown problem.

College cop accused of shooting escort

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A Florida university policeman shot an escort he met online, authorities said.

Jimmy Dac Ho, a campus officer at Florida Atlantic University, Monday went to the Boynton Beach home of Sheri Carter, who advertised her services as "Stephanie," police told The Palm Beach Post.

By the end of the encounter, the woman was handcuffed by the officer and shot in the abdomen and neck.

Carter is in Delray Medical Center, paralyzed from the waist down.

Ho is in jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder and false imprisonment. He quit the FAU force, said Deputy Chief Keith Totten.
 

Police investigating suspected shooting at Wandsworth College    
          
 Officers are investigating reports of a shooting at a Wandsworth college this afternoon, police have confirmed.

 Details of the apparent attack at South Thames College, in Wandsworth High Street, are still coming in but a spokeswoman for Wandsworth police revealed officers were looking into reports that a shot - or shots - were fired during a fight “involving a number of people”.

 However, a spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said two ambulance crews were sent to the college just before 1.45pm to reports of a “stabbing”.


Gun-toting MassBay student to face dangerousness hearing after Wellesley arrest

Wellesley — A MassBay Community College student charged with bringing a loaded semi-automatic weapon to the school’s Wellesley campus is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

At his arraignment on Feb. 4 Darryl Dookhran, 18, of Dorchester, pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges stemming from his Feb. 3 arrest, when police discovered an 18-round Tec-9 gun in his backpack. The dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Feb 8.

“There are no indications that Dookhran had any specific intent in bringing it into the school,” said Deputy Chief Bill Brooks. “Whether he was carrying it because he felt he needed to protect himself we don’t know, but that’s the speculation.”

Officers had been searching for Dookhran, a convicted felon, after an unidentified student tipped them off that he’d been bringing a gun to school. The student said that he’d noticed the butt of a gun sticking out from Dookhran’s waistband but kept it to himself. A week later he noticed Dookhran grabbing at his pants as if to conceal something and notified a teacher who in turn notified police.

For a week Wellesley officers in collaboration with Boston police, transit police, and campus security searched in vain for Dookhran, who didn’t show up to school or to any of his classes. Finally, on Feb. 3, Dookhran returned to campus and police confronted him as he waited in line at the registrar’s office.

After leading him into another room Dookhran allegedly backed up against a wall, and when officers tried to arrest him, began kicking and fighting. He’s facing charges ranging from resisting arrest to carrying an unlicensed firearm.



Suspect, principal played golf together weekend before fatal shooting

 SACRAMENTO, Calif SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Only last Sunday, the two golfing buddies spent the day together on the course. But on Wednesday, a janitor at a Placerville elementary school confronted his friend, the principal, with a gun, police said.

     In a flash of fire, Principal Sam LaCara of Louisiana Schnell School lay mortally wounded. Within an hour, the married father of three daughters, a respected school administrator known for his sense of humor and love of sports, died at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville.

     "It's a tragedy for Placerville and our entire society," Police Chief George Nielsen declared at an afternoon news conference, in which he announced that a suspect  the janitor  had been arrested and that all the school children were safe.      
 
 LaCara was gunned down shortly after 10:30 a.m. in his office at the Schnell School, a wooded campus for kindergartners to fifth-graders, that is located near nature trails and the scenic drive to Apple Hill.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police investigating the apparently accidental shooting of two students at a Los Angeles high school said on Wednesday they had arrested a pair of teenagers for helping the 17-year-old boy accused of bringing a gun to class.

Two sophomores at Gardena High School were injured by a single bullet on Tuesday when a loaded gun went off in a classmate's backpack during a health class.


Friend recalls Arizona suspect's disturbing decline

TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) - A onetime close friend of Arizona shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner says he remains baffled that everyone around the college dropout looked the other way as his behavior grew increasingly bizarre last year.
Zane Gutierrez, 22, said he was among Loughner's best pals until Loughner cut himself off from his social circle in March 2010, some 10 months before the rampage for which he is charged with trying to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Second Shooting at Student Apartments
An 18-year0old male is in the hospital tonight after being shot when a college party got out of hand. This is the second time that same apartment complex in Bath Township has opened up in gunfire.
Residents are shocked. A person in their apartment building was shot early saturday morning when a college party escalated.

"My roomate texted me. She said she heard gunshots and then saw a guy run across the street with a gun," said resident Jamie Thompson of Crossing Place Apartments.  

"I came home and cops were circling the building," said Jessyca Waldon, another resident of Crossing Place Apartments.

Bath Township police were responding to a noise complaint when they learned of the shooting. Five other police agencies assisted in the incident.  

"We were right across the street when we got the call," said Sergeant Scott Wriggelsworth of East Lansing Police Department.

Last night was the second party in 2 months at this complex that has resulted in gunfire.  A 20 year-old boy was shot and killed off Abbott Rd. leaving a party in December.

"Two shootings in about six weeks in a predominantly college area would be uncommon," said Sgt. Wriggelsworth.
     
    
SUV shooting nets 7-year sentence

 GALESBURG — A Galesburg man was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for a firing a gun at an occupied SUV last May.

Anthony Alfaro, 19, 118 W. First St., pleaded guilty to a class 1 felony charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a more serious class X felony charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The shooting involving Alfaro and another man, Xavier Parker, 22, took place on May 27 near Knox College, just south of 190 S. Academy St.

Knox County Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Kwacala, in recalling the events of that night, said police in the area heard six gunshots fired around 11 p.m. and responded to the scene. They were then flagged down by four individuals in an SUV, who told them they had been shot at by two men.
