We had a great story in Monday’s paper, reported by Ed Runyan, about the life of a Mosquito Lake boater being saved last fall by the park manager and an off-duty policeman.

Mosquito Lake park manager Mike Grammer and Bazetta policeman Joe Sofchek braved the worst waters in years last fall to rescue Dan Weinberg of Chagrin Falls.

Weinberg was trapped in high waves suddenly kicked up by remnants of Hurricane Ike that struck the area. His boat motor had flooded out.

Grammer and Sofchek charged across 6-foot-tall waves to get to Weinberg’s stalled-out boat. When they arrived, only the end of the boat was above water, and Weinberg was standing on what was left.

Both men were honored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Grammer was further honored by the Ohio Senate.

On Saturday, two days before our story was published, Grammer died.
