South America has long been an excllent source of solid wines that are affordable. Value shoppers are increasingly looking to Argentina and Chile for good quality to price ratios. Malbec put Argentina on the map and traditional varietals like Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc helped boost Chile's reputation. Recently, both countries have had success with a wider range of varietals.

Here's a look at four excellent South American Values:

1. 2014 Alamos Malbec $14 (Argentina)

A very nice representation of how you can get a lot of wine for not much money with this varietal. Full flavor of red fruits, moderate spice, and baker's chocolate.

2. 2014 New Age Red $12  (Argnetina)

One of several nice blends I tasted in preparation for this column. 70% Bonarda and 30% Malbec, Lighter and silky with medium body and an enticing finish

3. 2014 Bodega Norton Cabernet  $15 (Argentina)

Darker fruit flavors of blackberry and currant with a fresh nose of red flowers. Slightly earthy and spicy, with great balance and integration.

4. 2013 Vina Palo Alto Reserva $13 (chile)

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Syrah that delivers delightful fruit flavors from start to finish. An excellent example of how Chilean wineries can utilize traditional varietals really well.

You can use these four wines and dozens of others like them to launch your own adventure into South American wines. Local stores are stocking more options than ever, so pick a few up on your next shopping trip and see which one's appeal to you.
