Avignonesi winery was launched in 1974 and named after a member of the founding family. It was purchased in 2009 by Virginie Saverys, who has worked hard to convert the entire estate to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Saverys is a long-time resident of Tuscany who believes that it is "my duty to treat the soil with respect, leaving it and the vines healthier for future gnenrations."

Avignononesi owns 495 acres spread over the Montepulciano and Cortona appellations. They produce a little over 75,00 bottles a year with all the grapes being estate grown. Saverys is pleased with the winemaking team of Ashleigh Seymour and Matteo Giustiniani. "They have brought a breath of fresh air to Vino Nobile and developed a philosophy based on balance, elegance, and brightness of fruit."

The team has achieved some impressive results utiiizing the eight vineyard properties they own inside the Vino Nobile DOCG. They work hard to uncover the unique characteristics of Sangiovese from each selected micro-terriore. Their efforts have led to the revitilization of the famed Grandi Annate, which will be relased later this year (2015 vintage). The wine has not been made since 2007, but has a history of high ratings from the international wine press, including making The Wine Spectator Top 100 list with the 2001 vintage (#4).

Here's a look at the two wines I tasted:

2013 Avignonesi Rosso Di Montepulciano

Produced from Sangiovese grapes grown in the vineyard estates of Matracchio, Lodola and Badelle. Aged five months in oak and a minimum of three months in the bottle. Medium ruby red color with aromas of wild cherries and currant. The taste is round and distinct with a long, delicately spicy finish.

2012 Avignonesi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano

Produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in 8 estates located in the Monteulciano DOCG. Aged 12 months in French barriques and six months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by a minimum of six months in the bottle. Intense aromas of fresh red fruits and forest floor with a hint of sweet spices. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and long finish.
