I recently had achance to taste through the porttfolio of Miguel Torres Winery as part of the Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates Global Passport event at The House of Blues in Cleveland. The Torres family has one of the longest running winemaking traditions in Spain and they are still intimately involved in all the day to day operations.

Their Penedes (near Barcelona) based winery produces an incredibly deep and diverse wine portfolio that truly has something for everyone. Here's a look at four standouts from my tasting with the poeple from Torres:

2014 Verdeo (Rueda)

Beautiful pale yellow colour, flecked with green tints. Characterised by distinct notes of tropical fruit accompanied by citrus and a touch of fennel. Its intense nose adds to its freshness and elegance, with a lingering finish in the mouth, once again noting the green fruit so typical of the Verdejo variety.

2014 Vina Esmerelda (Catalunya)

A voluptuous, exotically perfumed nose, with deliciously well-defined primary aromas (some floral notes, roses, lilies...), complemented by secondary aromas derived from the wine’s controlled fermentation. Silky and sappy on the palate.

2013 Sangre De Toro Granacha (Catalunya)

All the exuberant aroma traditionally found in an intense, ripe red wine, with a sensual background of fine spices in good balance with perfumed notes reminiscent of blackberries. Full, long finish on the palate.

2012 Celeste Crianza (Ribera Del Duero)

Intense blackberry colour. Spicy and intense nose, with liquorice and black pepper hints on a base of well ripened fruits (blackberry and cherry). On the palate, very fruity at first with ripened tannins, also persistent and full bodied.

Miguel Torres wines are widely distributed by Glazer's throughout or Valley. If they're not in your favorite store or restaurant just ask the manager to bring a few in for you. I think you'll like their unique approach to making some of Spain's traditional varietals, and you'll definitely like to price you pay for the quality!
