I've been doing a lot of tasting lately as I renovate the wine lists at both Avalon country clubs where I serve as Wine Director. I'm also preparing to build the wine list for the new Avalon Resort and Spa, which involves selecting between 350-400 wines over the next two months. I hink I will taste over 500 wines during this time and I look forward to that challenge!
When you build a wine list from scratch you must be aware of several key factors, one of which is making sure you have lots of quality wines in the $20-$40 price range. This is considered the "sweet spot" for most people who buy wines while dining out or entertaining friends. As a result, the majority of the wines I'm tasting fall in this accessible price range.
I'll be writing about this tasting process over the next few months on www.vindy.com/valleyfood.
Here's a look at five wines at the $20 price point that stood out in a recent round of tastings:
2013 Riebeek Cellars Chardonnay (South Africa)
Tropical / citrus fruits with tantalizing freshness and bright acidity.
2013 Nobilo "Regional Collection" Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)
Light, and crisp with grapefruit and lime zest and a vivacious finish
2012 Simi Sonoma County Pinot Noir (California)
Light, and delicate with bright floral aromas and red cherry and raspberry fruits
2012 Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec (Argentina)
Well structured with ripe plum and cassis fruits and well integrated tannins
2013 Ravenswood "Beseiged" Red Blend
Well balanced with moderate tannins, black cherry, blueberry and a hint of vanilla.
Most of these wines should be easy to find in local stores. If they're not on the shelves at your favorite wine shop, ask them to bring some in for you. Cheers and enjoy the values!
