When a winery Owner or Winemaker takes the time to visit our Valley, I always do my best to take the time to meet with them and taste their wines. I have found these sessions to be the most instructive and educational tastings I do. My recent sit down with Edward Wallo, Owner of Yorkville Cellars, was a great introduction to an excellent portfolio of wines.
Edward and his wife Deborah established and built Yorkville Cellars from the ground up in Mendocino County about 100 miles north of San Francisco. Their first estate bottled wines were released in 1994 and they have been producing quality wines on their 180+ acre estate ever since.
The winery stakes the claim of being the only known winery to grow and produce each of the eight Bordeaux grapes as a varietal wine. Their vineyards have been certfieid organic since 1986.
Here's a look at the five wines I tasted with Edward:
2012 Sauvignon Blanc ($12.99)
Intense, crisp citrus flavors with vibrant acidity and rich texture on the finish.
2012 Eleanor of Aquitaine ($24.99)
An awesome blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Made in the classic style of a traditional Graves Bordeaux Blanc. Delightful and innovative.
2011 Hi-Rollr Red ($12.99)
Yes, that's the correct spelling. A medium bodied Zinfandel blend of 7 varietals.
2010 Merlot ($16.99)
Subtle, elegant, and lush with real depth and great balance. A great value!
2009 Richard The Lion-Heart ($30.99)
A blend of the orginal six noble red grapes of Bordeaux. Well structured and complex with extracted fruit flavors and moderate spice,
Yorkville Cellars wines are distributed locally by Natural States Wines. If your local restaurant or wine shop doesn't have them, they can easily get them for you.
