I often receive correspondence from wineries and PR firms providing me information on wines. The global reach of digital and social media makes this a relatively common occurrence for those of us who write about wine for a living.

I have learned to wade through the materials I recieve and investigate them before deciding whether to cover them for The Vindicator.

I received an email from Allesandro Boga who works for both the Wines of the Montefalco Consortium and The Arnaldo-Caprai Winery. Mr. Boga read my article "Italian Bubbly Finds Favor In Our Valley" and inquired whether I had tried any of the wines he represents.

It turns out I had not (a rarity), so he agreed to send me some samples and historical background on the wines. I was impressed by the wines, especially those from Arnaldo-Caprai.

In 1991, the Arnaldo Caprai winery began a fruitful collaboration with the University of Milan and several Italian research institutes in order to improve production results. This cutting-edge research led to the identification of new clones of Sagrantino and to the production of top quality wines. For all this work, Arnaldo Caprai has been named "European Winery of the Year" at the Wine Enthusiast Magazine's Wine Star Award 2012.

I tasted two wines of excellent quality:

2007 Arnaldo-Caprai "Collepiano"

100% Sagrantino grapes with great dark fruit flavors that run deep through the palate and mingle with notes of leather, smoke and moderate bacl pepper.

2010 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Rosso

70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, and 15% Merlot. Offers full-bodied flavor, dry with light tannins and a juicy finish.

Some of the other top producers from the Montefalco region include:

Antonelli San Marco

Tenuta Castelbuono

It may be a little challenging to find wines from these producers in our Valley right now. Mr. Boga and his firm, Colangelo Partners Public Relations, are working hard to make sure people around the world gain exposure to these wonderful wines.
