What more can be said about the world famous Thurman Cafe that hasn't already been said or written about the last 7 decades. This is the mecca for all things burger in the state of Ohio and is one of the most famous eating destinations in the country. Located on Thurman Avenue, it has been a landmark in German Village, (Columbus), since 1942.
All burgers are 3/4 pound and cooked to order. FULLY DRESSED = lettuce, tomato, pickle, raw onion, & mayo on the burger. Burgers are served with chips and a pickle spear unless otherwise noted. This place has all the charm of your local dive bar but serves up one of the best and biggest burgers you can ever hope to finish.
Out of the 20 or so burgers on the menu, I went with the Mushroom Pizza Burger, covered with mushrooms, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, and marinara. My buddy, Adam "Redbeard" Wylam, went with the Thurmantor. From the ground up; bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, banana peppers, 12 ounce burger, bacon, cheddar, another 12 ounce burger, sauteed mushrooms & onions, ham, mozzarella and American cheese, top bun. It's a monster! Other than the Thurmanator at $21.95, the burgers are priced between $10.99 and $13.99. Addable items include: mushrooms, egg, jalapeños, extra cheese, etc. for $1.49. Add bacon for $1.79.
My burger was delicious and is one of my go to's when I visit Thurman's 3-4 times a year. Adam tried his best but couldn't best the Thurmanator, (which is named after the Terminator himself since he has his big fitness convention in Columbus each year for the past 35 years). The burgers are always cooked properly and the meat is seasoned very well. With that much beef you don't want to eat an overcooked hockey puck with no flavor. They know what they are doing in the kitchen of this place. I can also recommend the wings at the Thurman Cafe. You get a full wing with drum and flat on it and the sauces are some of the best I've ever had.
The lines to get into this place are also legendary. On a Buckeye home game weekend one can wait up to 2 hours or more to get a seat in the dining area. There are only 50 or so seats in the Thurman Cafe so make sure to give your name to the hostess and be patient. Also, if you have a party of more then 4-5 people you wont sit together as all the booths and tables only hold 4-5 people max.
Take your appetite and enjoy the ambiance of one of the true burger destinations on the planet. Any show on TV that has featured burgers or monster eats has had the Thurman Cafe on it. It is worth the trip to Columbus to enjoy it in all it's splendor.
