The Brick, open since 1963, is a very casual dining spot on SR 82 about a minute east of downtown Garrettsville. As we approached, we saw that a ½ slab of ribs that night was $9.95. As we entered, we found a comfortable environment with a small but very local crowd.

Since The Brick is the home to the “Freddy Burger” and has a very limited burger selection, it only made sense that we all chose the Freddy. The hard decision about the Freddy ended up being whether we wanted a half or a full pounder. Of the small selection of sides, some ordered the onion rings, others the Cajun fries.

Freddy arrived resting a plate. The side order sat next to him. He was fully dressed and wearing his crown. Looking at the burger, we could see our cooked to order burgers covered with melted cheese and lettuce. There was just enough burger juice that kept the burger moist and trickled out onto the heel bun

Freddy was a slippery fellow. As we all picked it up, the burger and the toppings slid around. After repositioning our hold to keep Freddy together, we bit into the juicy hand pattied burger that easily broke apart. As we continued eating, the solid bun started to come apart toward the end. This whole process provided that little bit of sloppiness that required a few extra napkins.

The burger and sides arrived hot. As far as flavor, the Freddy Burger was rather basic and mild. Mustard, ketchup and salt and pepper were provided. The onion rings and fries were crispy. The number of rings seemed a bit sparse. The Cajun fries are not overpowering.

You can get a nice, inexpensive burger for about five bucks. Add a few bucks for a side and beverage and you’ll leave full but not bankrupt. While The Brick accepts credit cards, you can pay cash and avoid a $1.00 transaction fee.
