TIME: This Kid ....   Hero of 2016

WHAT???

Oxford says:

HEROhttp://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">" a person...who is admired by many people for doing something brave or good"

http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> brave: "(of a person willing to do  things which are difficult or painful; not afraid"

So, you're wondering, what did this kid, thisHERO do? Now, remember this is TIME magazine... Time.com

http://time.com/4165770/watermelon-boy-cricket-viral/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"...http://time.com/4165770/watermelon-boy-cricket-viral/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">a kid who was attending a cricket match in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, when he was filmed in the stands consuming an entire watermelon, rind and all.

http://time.com/4165770/watermelon-boy-cricket-viral/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The game’s commentators were understandably puzzled and riveted: “That’s… I’ve never seen that before in my life,” one commentator said; the other added, “That is unbelievable.”"

Most folks would use the word HERO to describe someone who went into a burning building, putting their own life at risk, to save a cat, a dog, a rabbit, a bird a PERSON!  Maybe you remember this story about some HEROS,  from about a year ago:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2929611/Animal-trapped-frozen-Canadian-lake-rescued-locals-armed-chainsaw-rope-lots-muscle.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Animal trapped in frozen Canadian lake is rescued by locals armed with chainsaw, rope and lots of muscle. These folks risked their lives to save the moose!

Or, closer to home:

"http://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/elwood-police-officer-saves-family-from-burning-home" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Elwood police officer saves family from burning home .... http://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/elwood-police-officer-saves-family-from-burning-home" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">4-year-old daughter Shauna was one of the people Taylor saved. As thanks for hisheroic efforts, all he asked of Shauna was a hug."  - - - his HEROICefforts!

We ALL get that, yeah?
REAL HEROES !  Yes, most are in blue, police officers and firefighters who run TOWARD danger, and some come "...http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2929611/Animal-trapped-frozen-Canadian-lake-rescued-locals-armed-chainsaw-rope-lots-muscle.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">in the shape of a group of kind-hearted locals..."

Of course there's more to the "watermelon boy" story:        http://time.com/4165770/watermelon-boy-cricket-viral/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"http://time.com/4165770/watermelon-boy-cricket-viral/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> Turns out Watermelon Boy has celebrity blood: he’s the son of Melbourne’s SEN 1116 radio host and sports reporter Tony Schibeci, who revealed the Boy’s identity to all the world Saturday." - So, probably, dad set this up w/his son.
I don't have a problem w/dad setting his son up for the publicity, I have a problem with the media billing  the boy as a HERO! Remember, various media outlets are billing him as a HERO, not his dad.

The youngster does benefit from eating the rind:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/408893-benefits-of-watermelon-rinds/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Most people discard the rind of the juicy watermelon, but don’t be so hasty – the watermelon rind has many benefits. Whether you eat the rind or use it topically, this often-wasted food can do good things for your body. Finding a use for it also helps cut down on the amount of garbage you produce, so it’s good for the environment as well.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/408893-benefits-of-watermelon-rinds/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The rind may not be as juicy as the flesh of a watermelon, but you can eat it. A 1-inch cube of watermelon rind contains 1.8 calories. The majority of the calories come from carbohydrates, with 0.32 g per serving. While you will not derive a tremendous amount of macronutrients from eating watermelon rind, this food does contain some vitamins. One serving provides 2 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C and 1 percent of the vitamin B-6 your body requires every day.  This makes watermelon rind good for your skin and immunity, as well as the health of your nervous system.

When we dilute words, they lose  the real meaning.

So,maybe I should be glad that in our society,  one deposit/no return males are referred to as 'baby daddies' not FATHERS. I gave just 2 examples, above, of HEROES. The countless, selfless, courageous acts that are  done everyday should be called HEROIC, not some kid at a cricket game eating watermelon rind.  Maybe, in 2016,  we need a new category for misused words...like: HERO!
