West Branch Middle School’s two newest additions won’t sit in desks, can’t read and don’t say much, but Penelope and Ellie are some of the school’s most popular attendees. Penelope, a 9-year-old golden retriever, spends one day a week in Becky Thrasher’s multi-handicapped classroom with her owner, Suzanne Biery, who is an aide in the classroom. Ellie, a 1 1/2-year-old golden doodle, spends three days per week with her owner Kelley Warga, school counselor.

Mayor Jay Williams brought his son Ethan, who is nearly 9 months old, to the grand opening, joking that the boy will give him cover to act like a kid and enjoy the center himself. He said the center will be a great place for children and families to come and have fun while learning. He thanked the Joneses for “sharing the wealth of your love.”

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, 12798 Echo Dell Road, will finally have a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon Saturday. Volunteers have created and run the facility near East Liverpool for 11 years. Jim Kerr, who retired after 30 years as a Beaver Local biology teacher, wound up becoming the curator and preservationist. He had acquired stuffed animals from the school district but didn’t have a place to put them. After talking to state officials, the stuffed animals were put in a building belonging to the park.

Lee “Shiloh” Pickering, 61, and his wife, Ruthie Pickering, 33, of Portland, Oregon, will likely be in Connecticut May 1 after starting their travels in their hometown Oct. 27, 2010. “We ride all over for freedom. People are locked up in their jobs and in their lives,” said Shiloh, a former firefighter.
