Austintown Bus Issue
A committee of concerned parents say their Tuesday news conference is only the opening salvo in a fight against Austintown’s proposal to offer public-transit vouchers to private-school students instead of using district vehicles. “Stick with us and fight this fight. ...We cannot let them win because if they win, who’s next? Canfield? Boardman?” said David Gerchak, a member of the Austintown Parents for the Safe Transportation of Students Committee.
Struthers Fatal Accident

Scacchetti Fire Austintown
Plans to open a new restaurant at the site of one that closed several years ago will likely be on hold after flames destroyed the building Monday. Firefighters were called to the former Scacchetti’s Restaurant on Mahoning Avenue at Four Mile Run Road late Monday morning. Chief Andy Frost Jr. said the building was recently sold and the new owner planned to open a new business there.
Vacant House Fires
A 36-year-old city man with a history of setting fires to vacant buildings is set to be arraigned today in connection with multiple arson fires that kept firefighters busy Thursday morning, but he may not be the only responsible party. Spencer Morris Washington, 36, of Falls Avenue is due to be arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court for arson. He was arrested Thursday morning. Washington is accused of setting fire to vacant homes at 343 Falls Avenue and 362 Breaden Avenue, both owned at one time by his grandfather — and the Washington’s father, Spencer Morris, said he knows his son’s motive.
