Jury selection begins in murder trial for man accused in 2014 shooting
Published: Mon, March 28, 2016 @ 10:39 a.m. YOUNGSTOWN — Jury selection is underway in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a man accused of a 2014 murder. Keith Sims, 27, of Ford Avenue, is on trial before Judge Maureen Sweeney on a charge for the Oct. 25, 2014, shooting death of Shaniece Wells, 23, of Maplewood Court inside a home in the 800 block of East Boston Avenue. Ford was a suspect immediately after Wells died and turned himself into police just two days after she was killed. He has been in the county jail since then.
The 800 block of East Boston Avenue, where the murder took place, is just under 4 street miles from the Youngstown Playhouse.
Friday night killing over a woman, Youngstown detective says Published: Sat, May 7, 2016 @ 9:57 p.m. YOUNGSTOWN City police say a man who was shot late Friday and died early Saturday was arguing over a woman with the man accused of shooting him. Kenneth Evans, 57, died at about 3 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being shot in the stomach at about 10 p.m. Friday in the street of the 1900 block of Manhattan Avenue. Evans is the city’s seventh homicide in 2016. Arrested a few hours after the shooting at a home on West LaClede Avenue was Bernard Barnes, also 57. He was originally charged with felonious assault but the charge is expected to be upgraded to murder, said Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the Youngstown Detective Bureau. Bobovnyik said detectives were able to identify Barnes as a suspect from interviewing several witnesses. He is being held in the Mahoning County jail pending his arraignment Monday in municipal court.

Youngstown hyrdrants tampered with overnight on South Side Published: Fri, September 12, 2014 @ 9:10 a.m. YOUNGSTOWN — Fire reports said several fire hydrants were tampered with overnight on the South Side. Crews were called to 600 Playhouse Lane about 1:20 a.m. today for a report of an open hydrant and when they arrived they discovered someone had taken the cap off the hydrant. Reports said other open hydrants were then discovered at Willis and Overland avenues, Hillman and Kenmore avenues, Myrtle and Edwards avenues and Glenwood and Chalmers avenues. The police department was notified as well as the water department, reports said.
