March 23, 1968: More than 1,500 clergy, religious, seminarians, and laymen attended the funeral Mass of Youngstown Bishop Emmet Michael Walsh in St. Columba Cathedral. There, the Most Rev. Paul F. Tanner, D.D., of Washington, D.C., general secretary of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, deliver the eulogy. Pallbearers and funeral directors prepare to place the casket containing the body of Bishop Walsh, shepherd of nearly 300,000 Roman Catholics in the six-county Diocese of Youngstown, into the hearse for the trip from cathedral to Calvary Cemetery, which final rites were offered by Bishop Malone.  Carrying the bronze coffin are (left to right) James P. Griffin, steelworkers union leader; John E. Fox, president of the Fox Funeral Home; William Towell of Canton and Atty. Robert M. Lettau (left), pastor of St. Edward Church and former chancellor for Bishop Walsh, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Owen L. Surrounding the main altar are Ohio bishops who concelebrated the Mass with the archbishop.  From the left they are: Bishop Clarence G. Issenman of Cleveland, Auxiliary Bishop E. A. McCarthy of Cincinnati, Auxiliary Bishop Clarence Elwell of Cleveland, the archbishop and chaplains, Bishop George A. More than 1,500 clergy, religious, seminarians, and laymen attending the funeral Mass for Bishop Emmet Michael Walsh Thursday in St. Columba Cathedral hear the Most Rev. Paul F. Tanner, D.D., of Washington, D.C., general secretary of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, deliver the eulogy.  Bishop Tanner said Bishop Walsh, who died last Saturday, was years ahead of his time in concerted efforts by American bishops, a principle that became an important product of the Vatican II Council.
