This 2013 photo provided by Nassau County SPCA shows a 7-month-old pit bull called Miss Harper, whose ears and leg were cut off in a botched operation by a veterinary technician unlicensed to do surgery. The dog’s owners and the technician were convicted of felony animal cruelty, and the case inspired passage of a law establishing an animal abuser registry in Nassau County. Legislation is being proposed that would treat animal abusers like sex offenders in New York, with their names and faces in a public online registry.

Joshua Dixon Elementary School students in Columbiana recently participated in Jump Rope for Heart, an American Heart Association fundraising event. Jump ropes, a trampoline and noodles students could jump over were some of the activities offered during gym class. In total, 103 students participated in the weeklong event. The school set its fundraising goal at $5,500. As of Feb. 5, $3,064 had been raised. Donations will be collected until Friday.

Boardman boys and girls swim teams have had another record-breaking year, winning the Northeast Aquatic Conference in Wooster in January. The teams also won the American Athletic Conference championship at Warren Harding High School. The team is determined to keep its winning streak going. Recently, the teams visited Ralph & Friends Hair Designers, where the boys’ team chose a “traditional” hair dye, brazen and brassy blonde. The girls’ team went a little more subtle, deciding on red streaks or highlights.
