Julie Pagnotta, right, recently received the Commitment to Literacy Award from the Mahoning Valley Council of the International Reading Association. A reception took place at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Pagnotta is an early childhood instructor at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, and has been teaching there since 1987. She was nominated by coworker Terry Billock, left, for sharing her love of literature and promoting the importance of reading throughout her teaching career.

Megan Ellashek of Armstrong Cable was the guest speaker at a recent Austintown Rotary meeting. Ellashek discussed the program, Healing Heroes, which connects military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder to service dogs. Armstrong is directly paying for half the cost of five dogs, and is gathering donations to support the other half. As more donations have come in, Armstrong recently raised its goal to seven dogs. They also are selling $10 stuffed dog toys to benefit the program. To donate to Healing Heroes, call Ellashek at 330-726-0115, ext. 228.

Ryan Tekac, director of the Environmental Division of the Mahoning County District Board of Health, was the speaker for Struthers Rotary recently. Denise Loboy hosted Tekac to stress the importance of a healthy environment near Lake Hamilton, where she lives. Tekac presented the various services provided by the Mahoning and Youngstown boards of health. He told members that his division addresses problems with water quality, sewage systems, public areas, food operations, rabies control, lead hazards, tattoos, body piercings, waste and vector control. The food inspection program is the division’s largest, covering more than 900 sites in the county, including 350 mobile sources. The division’s rabies-control program offers vaccinations for $8 at various locations in the county. For information on the environmental division, call 330-270-2855.
