The literary society committee for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is planning an upcoming author event featuring Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times best-selling author of novels such as “The Weekenders,” “Beach Town,” “Ladies Night,” “Deep Dish” and more. The event on Aug. 17 will be held at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and appetizers. The author’s presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Reservations are required by contacting the Library’s Development Office at 330-740-6086. The 23rd annual Junior League of Youngstown Pink Ribbon Tea will take place at noon Aug. 21 in the Stambaugh Auditorium Ballroom, 1000 Fifth Ave. Doors will open at 11 a.m. The Pink Ribbon committee co-chairwomen are Pam Nock of Austintown and Susan Stewart of Boardman. Survivors attend for free. The tea was initiated in 1994 by Susan Berny and Annette Camacci. Breast-cancer survivors who would like to attend this year’s tea should call the league office at 330-743-3200 for an invitation. Cost for a guest is $20. RSVPs must be received by Aug. 7. The Struthers Rotary held its annual president dinner recently at Selah’s Restaurant. Joann Sweeney and Dottie Melody received the Paul Harris Fellow award. Jessica Tirone, Struthers High School student and Interact Club president, reported on some of the activities of the club, and Cathy Miller, president of the Struthers Rotary Community Corp., spoke about their activities. The Poland Relay for Life recently finished its 2017 season with an event featuring this year’s survivors, who led the opening lap. They accompanied their caregivers to a complimentary meal. Last year, the Poland Relay reached its goal of $53,000. This year’s goal is $55,000, and so far, the teams have raised $54,102.64. The teams have until Aug. 31 to reach their goal, so fundraisers are planned for July and August. Tax deductible donations may be made online at www.relayforlife.org/polandOH, or send a check to yhe American Cancer Society, Attn: Poland Relay for Life, 525 N. Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406. Please write Poland Relay for Life on the check memo line. The 2018 theme will be “Luau for Life.” Each team will select a tropical island as its inspiration. Members of Ikebana Youngstown recently hosted their annual flower show in the D.D. Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Park. The exhibit featured Japanese flower designs with arrangements from the Ichiyo School. Above, Shoji screens were provided for background for the exhibits. Designs were created by Dana Babik, Sheila Bowman, Kaaren Cabraja, Marilyn Chiu, Joyce Dunbar, Mary Lou Fiere, Cynthia Foust, Marion Franzen, Patricia Gojdics, Ann Hanka, Beverly Italiano, Nancy Kovach, Natalie Majoros, Lauren Mangino, Pearl Marlos, Beverly Patrick, Linda Petras, Lillian Quaranta and Sharon Sweeney. Ikebana Youngstown was founded in 1963 and is a member of the Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown Area Inc. Shirley Winkler of Saxonburg, Pa., a master instructor of the Ichiyo School, is the instructor for the group, which meets the second Tuesday of most months.

Members of the Mahoning Garden Club met on July 5 to celebrate the club's 90th anniversary. The club was founded in 1927 to stimulate an interest in gardening, cooperate in the protection of native flora and encourage civic planting.
