SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Candice Oesch Downie of Columbiana was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in December. Her husband, Jim Downie, wrote a letter to the Columbiana Exempted Village School District explaining that she was a half-credit short of earning the diploma in 1982, and wants to be a role model to her son James, a junior at the high school. The school board authorized Don Mook, superintendent, to award the diploma Feb. 21. Present for the award, from left, were James; Jim; Lance Hostetler, principal of Columbiana High School; Candice; and Mook.
