Ten students from Austintown Middle and Fitch High School were chosen to participate in the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Honors Band. Students performed at Stambaugh Auditorium on Nov. 18. The middle-school honors band, above, are Kailyn Tibolla, clarinet; Kristin Yeager, flute; Paige McBride, tuba; Noah Snyder, horn; and Armand Giovannone, trumpet. Liberty Local School District has added Pawss to its staff. Pawss is the district’s therapy dog and was named as such because the school’s focus is on positive behavioral support and interventions and PAWSS is the acronym that is used. Pawss is on campus every day and spends time with students when they are overwhelmed, angry or sad. The students also may read to her.

West Branch Middle School recognizes one boy and one girl student each month as its students of the month for excelling in the classroom and having good character. Qualities the school looks for when choosing a winner include trustworthiness, responsibility and respectfulness. November’s winners were: eighth-graders Jennifer Phillis and Zach Peters; seventh-graders Lachlan Cameron and Connor Mayle; sixth-graders Haley Close and Michael Dorris; and fifth-graders Tessa Nezbeth and Logan Klemann. William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School collected canned goods to assemble baskets to distribute to needy families in the school. This is a project of the school’s PTO and Key Club. The teachers donate the turkeys and gift cards also are given to the families to buy potatoes and fresh produce. Staff members hope that the students learn a valuable lesson about helping others. During Greek Week recently at Youngstown State University, sororities and fraternities worked together to collect
clothing to give to United Way: Neighborhood Ministries, providing more than 9,000 articles of clothing. They also took part in Friendsgiving, collecting canned food for the Campus Student Food Bank. More than 5,000 food items were donated.

Holy Family Youth Ministry decorated Holy Family Church in Poland on Dec. 17. The group also sent Christmas cards to the sick, home-bound, nursing-home and assisted-living residents of the parish. The annual Father Richard’s Bakery took place, and all proceeds will be used for the summer mission trip.
