Above, West Branch Middle School student council members Peyton Bell, left, and Kennedy Close, invited fellow students, teachers, staff and community members to donate to its annual food drive, which took place from Nov. 9 through 17. The items will help needy families during the holiday season. Their goal was to collect more than 3,000 pounds.

Jo Taylor, Brookfield superintendent, and Stacey Filicky, Brookfield Elementary School prinicipal, recently participated in the Rickenbacker Air National Guard “BossLift” in Columbus. A “BossLift” is an aerial refueling of a military aircraft. This one was done with Thunderbolt jets, while flying in a KC-135 Stratotanker as part of the 121st Air Refueling Wing training mission. The host for the day was retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Robert P. “Lance” Meyer, Jr. Above, from left, are Filicky and Taylor at the base in Columbus. The “BossLift” thanked the Brookfield School District for supporting the National Guard and Reserve during Brookfield Middle School teacher Steve Sambroak’s deployment to Afghanistan.

Students who maintained positive behavior in and out of the classroom at West Branch Middle School recently were rewarded with lunch in the Warrior Way Hard Work Cafe. The student Council purchased an air hockey table for use in the cafe this year. They also provide games, hot cocoa and a fun environment for fellow students. Members of the Campbell City School marching band were recently selected to participate in the OMEA District 5 Honors Band. The honors band is sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association. Proceeds from a spaghetti dinner, honey sale, and Heavenly Harvest Gardeners’ homemade beef vegetable soup sale went toward the donation. Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley recently received a $5,000 grant from Home Savings Charitable Foundation to cover scholarships for JA Titan Business Challenge and local JA programming. JA Titan Business Challenge is a free competition at Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business that will take place March 8 for high school juniors and seniors. The competition allows students to use their creativity and leadership abilities. JA Titan is an interactive online business simulation that offers a unique way for students to learn what it takes to compete in the marketplace and how to run a successful business. Members of Columbiana High School’s Interact Club and middle school student council members collected items to send to veterans deployed overseas through a program with Boatsie’s Boxes. More than 100 stockings were stuffed and boxed for delivery to West Virginia for a flight overseas. Students participating are, seated, Joey Baylor, and standing, front row: Elizabeth Siembida, Lily Marsco, Mrs. Stephanie Baylor and Logan Pasco. In back are Richard Ulam, Noah Silver, Marisa McDonough and Mrs. Meg Silver. Students presented the finished project during the Veteran’s Day program at the school.
