Japanese students and their hosts gathered for a picnic to play games and eat at Austintown Park on Aug. 2. Students arrived at Ohio State University on July 23 and then traveled to homes throughout the state to experience three weeks of being in “a real American family.” Learning the culture, experiencing local activities, life on a farm or in suburbs, language improvement, American food, and long-term friendships are among the goals of the adventure. The three weeks uses the entire Japanese summer break from school. Greenbriar Healthcare Center recently requested “Who is your Hero?” nominations from staff, residents and community members. Greenbriar’s hero is a resident, Janice Guy, She was nominated by a staff member who has watched her accomplish things regardless of the challenges she faces. Guy, who taught history at Struthers High School for 25 years, also was nominated by a former student who is grateful for her guidance. Guy was rewarded with a trip to the beauty shop, and she was showered with gifts from the staff at Greenbriar. Above, Guy is shown being presented with her award. The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Youngstown, was the recipient recently of a gift of $20,000 from the employees of St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. This contribution was generated over multiple years through a variety of employee-driven fundraising events. The donation was made in support of the Rescue Mission’s “Move Our Mission” capital campaign. Judge Mary DeGenaro of the 7th District Court of Appeals addressed members of the Rotary Club of Austintown at a recent meeting. She explained the jurisdiction of the court in eastern Ohio and the kinds of rulings handed down in an appeal. Judge DeGenaro has served on the court since 2000, and she encouraged members to be willing to serve on juries and to study candidates carefully in elections.
