SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Altrusa International of Youngstown and NAACP Youngstown Branch sponsored a back-to-school event Aug. 19 at the Boys and Girls Club. Books and 120 bags of school supplies were distributed to children and teens and a lunch was served. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR The Youngstown Rotary Club awarded a presidential Paul Harris Fellowship to Ashley Orr, Youngstown State University’s first Rhodes Scholar. Rotary President Bill Lawson, left, presented the award to Orr during the club’s weekly meeting Aug. 31. The award is given to Rotarians who have contributed or have had contributions made in their name of at least $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Rotarians Scott Schulick and John Slanina made the contributions in Orr’s name for her long-time association with the Rotary. Orr spoke to the Rotary about her path to the Rhodes Scholarship and her leadership and volunteer experiences while she was a YSU student. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics in May and recently completed an internship with The Rocky Ridge Neighborhood Association in Youngstown. The Paul Harris Fellowship was established in 1957 to show appreciation for substantial contributions to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Club of Youngstown is part of Rotary International.

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Ken Calhoun, commander of the All-American VFW Meander Post 9571, was one of 11 veterans honored at the Sept. 9 Patriot Day celebration at Quaker Steak & Lube, Austintown. Calhoun served in the U.S. Marine Corps, Army and Air Force. He retired after serving for 28 years and in three wars, Vietnam, Persian Gulf and the War on Terror. Calhoun is pictured with his family after the ceremony, including his son Tom, left, his wife Donna, and his son Trevor.

Boys State is a summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by The American Legion and Auxiliary for students who are nominated by their high schools.
