SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley awarded its first annual Jean Rider Scholarships at a meeting June 27 at the Stonebridge Grille in Boardman. The recipients are, from left, Travis Jones, Boardman High School; Celine Hildack, Campbell Memorial; Tucker Widlicka, United; Taylor Valerio, Campbell Memorial; and Olivia Kochunas, Champion. Jean Rider, center, is a board member of the Partnership and the scholarship is named to honor her advocacy for the diabetic community and service to the partnership. The Partnership is a non-profit organization which works through The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support diabetics and their caregivers. Ankle and Foot Care Center is a major supporter of the Partnership and will host a golf outing at Pine Lakes Golf Club on Aug. 19. The event is open to the public and groups may register by calling the Center at 330-629-8800. The Partnership also will have a booth in the medical building at the Canfield Fair.

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Alzheimer Network volunteers are preparing to host its annual garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. next Saturday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road. Hundreds of items will be available at bargain prices. Looking over recent items donated is Cindy LaBuda, AlzNet board member. The Alzheimer Network is a nonprofit organization that provides 12 free monthly family support groups in the area as well as numerous educational seminars for caregivers. For information on Alzheimer’s disease or about the sale, call the network information line at 330-788-9755.

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR The Youngstown Shrine Club participated in Canfield’s Fourth of July parade to raise awareness for its philanthropic work. The fraternal organization provides support for 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout North America that provide care to children with neural, muscular and skeletal conditions, burn injuries, and other special health care needs, regardless of the patient or family’s ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals rely on local organizations and clubs for support. The Youngstown club donates to Shriners International, the Al Koran Shrine Temple of Cleveland and to the Erie and Cincinnati Shriners Hospitals, and also provides transportation for patients at the Erie and Cincinnati facilities. Club members who marched in the parade include, in front from left, Denny Keslar, Jim Burnham, Lou Garland, Bob Ridzon and Jay Jones; and in the back are Dave Hartzler, Ralph Bud Lewis, Fred DeZee, Howard Merritt Jr., Bob Seeger and Jim Hazlett.
