SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Home Savings Charitable Foundation recently donated $1,350 to the Columbiana County Educational Service Center. The money was used to sponsor the Columbiana County Youth Leadership Summit at Kent State University on Oct. 21. The summit provided eighth- and ninth-grade students with leadership workshops to help them plan and implement community service projects during the school year. Six local districts participated and 74 students attended. The event featured a presentation by Rachel Darroch of Rustic Pathways Foundation and interactive sessions led by the Effective Leadership Academy. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Boardman High School Spartan marching band performed in the annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago, which had more than 400,000 spectators on State Street and millions of television viewers. The Spartans have been regular performers in the parade, with invitations extended to them every four years since the early 1970s. Band members attended a dinner and dance reception for all the marching bands, and the BHS Jazz Ensemble 1 performed during the dinner for more than 2,000 musicians and band directors. The band also enjoyed a cruise on Lake Michigan, shopping and sightseeing on The Magnificent Mile, the Willis Tower Sky deck, the Lincoln Park Zoo, Millennium Park, and the Broadway production “Finding Neverland.”

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association participated in National Philanthropy Day by making two no-sew blankets for Making Kids Count, a nonprofit organization that serves local foster children. Members also purchased sunflower petals to honor a sister, friend or member which funds its scholarship endowments.
