SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary sponsor three national scholarship contests for high school and middle school students each year. VFW Meander Auxiliary 9571 of Ellsworth recognized local students for two of these contests at a year-end assembly at Western Reserve High School. For this year’s Patriot’s Pen essay-writing contest, students in sixth- through eighth-grades wrote a 300- to 400-word essay on the theme “What Freedom Means to Me.” Above, Cathy Schafer, left, auxiliary president, presented a certificate, pin and $50 check to the top three contestants, Na’Zaviya Lampkins, Gabriel Platt and Grace Baird, with assistance from auxiliary treasurer Rosemary Tornincasa. The 44 students who entered the contest received a certificate of participation. For the Young American Creative Patriotic art awards contest, the auxiliary selected WRHS senior Bailey Hornberger’s piece as its entry for the national contest. The theme for this contest was the student’s choice, but was required to be patriotic. Below, Hornberger, right, received a certificate, pin and $100 check from Schafer at the assembly. The auxiliary will promote these contests again in the coming school year.
