Salem Historical Society is hosting a Hands On History event from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Dale Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave., for students in grades four through six. Activities include designing a quilt pattern with a secret code like those used during the abolitionist period to help slaves on their quest to freedom, learning how to write with a quill pen and dressing in period costumes. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
Ward-Thomas Home and Museum, 503 Brown St., Niles, will be the setting of a Heritage Day celebration and open house honoring all veterans from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be a display of war memorabilia in the Westenfield room and a Wall of Honor boards honoring deceased veterans. Guests also are urged to explore a large display of old tools in the barn at the museum. Cost will be $5, and children under 12 can enter for free. At right is Dave Rosine displaying a picture book of area men and women serving in the military in World War II.
