SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning County office, will offer monthly social outings for area families with children on the autism spectrum through its Circle of Friends program. The program welcomes 3- to 18-year-olds to enjoy local activities with peers of similar development, with support provided by trained educators and practitioners. Ages 12 and older will meet on the first Wednesday and 11 and younger on the third Wednesday of each month. Parents and other care providers are welcome to stay and participate in any sessions. Circle of Friends provides children on the spectrum with an environment to build relationship skills essential to maintain healthy friendships. Typical peers without developmental disabilities are welcome, and learn skills like patience, leadership and understanding while also practicing friendship skills. Planned 2015-2016 outings include golf in September; gardening, October; fitness, November; art, December; movies, January; animals, February; health, March; music, April; restaurant, May; picnic, June; mini golf, July; and bowling, August. Memberships in the Circle are $100 per child and are available through Oct. 15. This includes reserved spots on all events, admissions, snacks, a logo T-shirt, monthly newsletter, web-based interaction for older children, facilitated parent discussion at events with potential guest speakers and invitations to additional special events. Non-member participation is available for $20 per person per event if not sold out. Fees cover materials, entrance fees and staff. For information, call 330-507-3893 or email safeprograms@gmail.com.
