Scott Schulick, president of the Rotary Club of Youngstown, presents Annabelle Day, Vindicator 2014 Regional Spelling Bee grand champion, with a gift certificate to iTunes. The club met May 21. It annually honors scholastic achievements of local students, including the spelling bee. Annabelle is a seventh-grader at Willow Creek Learning Center in Boardman. She participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 28.

The winner is Shannon Whitaker, who is attending Penn State Shenango and majoring in occupational therapy. Dr. Diane Kurarsky, the professor who recommended her for the scholarship, also attended. Special guest for the evening was Sister Isabelle, OSU, who presented the club with a scrapbook with club history collected by her sister, a life member of the association. From left are Cathy Campana, president of the association; Whitaker; Barbara Banks, vice president; and Mary Place Thomas, scholarship chairwoman. For information about membership call 330-707-1262.

Members honored all deceased Mahoning County public educators for the 2013-2014 membership year. “The Unwinding,” a book by George Parker, was purchased by the John M. Knapick Memorial for deceased members and will become part of the collection at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Struthers Rotary recently awarded seven William Comstock scholarships to Struthers students who serve the community through activities and organizations that help others. From left are Tom Baringer, Rotary scholarship chairman; and recipients Gary Muntean, Halle Smrek, McKenna Shives, Lindsey Opritza, Alexa Bayus, Olivia Torisk and Sean Guerrieri. The Rotary and the Comstock family have funded these scholarships. Since 1984, Struthers Rotary has awarded more than $80,000 in scholarships.
