P.R.E.P. Learning Center of Youngstown recently sponsored a 
book giveaway at Jackson Milton Elementary School through its 
literacy program, Read & Succeed. The program was prompted by Kelly McCorkle, a sophomore at Jackson Milton High School, 
who volunteered 10 hours to raise funds for the center at the 
elementary school because of her enjoyment of reading. McCorkle raised $90 for the center, a nonprofit organization that offers a 
variety of free programs such as one-on-one tutoring, after-
school homework assistance, literacy and STEM programs. She is pictured with Rod Harris, the co-founder of P.R.E.P. To learn more about the center, visit preplearningcenter.org.

Second-grader Alex LaPlante shows his Minecraft cake that 
recently won top honors at Holy Family School’s cake walk 
during Catholic Schools Week. Alex is the son of John and Laurie LaPlante of Poland. Students and staff vote for their favorite cake and the top three cakes are recognized with prizes. During Family Fun Night, visitors and students play musical chairs to see who wins the cake of their choice until all the cakes are gone. This is the ninth year the school has sponsored the cake walk.
