Lowellville’s Emily Carlson hands the baton off  to Kelly Hynes during the final leg of the girls 4x200 meter relay on the first day of the Division III district championship track meet at Springfield Local High on Wednesday. The Lowellville girls finished in the top eight to qualify for the finals Friday. The girls also won the title in the 4x800 relay and will compete in the regional.

Suzanne Wilcox of Orchard Avenue in Hubbard says water from a detention pond from a nearby business causes her property to flood when it rains. Wilcox said she’s complained about the problem to city officials for years without any solutions. Compounding the problem, she said, has been the inability of the city engineer’s assistant to get her copies of site and drainage plans she wants to help fix the problem.

Deputy Mike Traxler views flooded homes in Vicksburg, Miss., Wednesday, May 18,  2011. Floodwaters from the Mississippi river are expected to crest in Vicksburg on Thursday.   Some of the worst flooding is in the area from Vicksburg northeast to Yazoo City, along the Yazoo River. The Yazoo Backwater Levee north of Vicksburg connects with the main Mississippi River levee. The Corps of Engineers officials had predicted that at least a foot of water could pour over the top of the levee, flooding tens of thousands of more acres of farmland in the lower Mississippi Delta.

The Syrian opposition called for a general strike Wednesday to protest the regime but the appeal seemed to go largely unheeded. Schools, shops and other businesses were open in the capital, Damascus, and other Syrian cities amid a tight security presence. Syria's president said the country's security forces have made mistakes during the uprising against his regime, blaming poorly trained police officers at least in part for a crackdown that has killed more than 850 people over the past two months.

Each year, Rotary Club of District 6650 participates in a group study exchange with another country. Young professionals participating in the program are sent abroad for four to six weeks of study while living with professionals in a host country. This year, members of the 2011 Exchange Team from Rotary District 3820 in the Philippines, accompanied by a Rotarian and four non-Rotarians, visited District 6650. After being treated to a pizza dinner, team members display mementos of the visit they received from Struthers Rotary Club. The exchange group also visited Boy Scout Troop 101, where they received patches and Scouting memorabilia, and toured Yellow Creek Park.
