Frank and Paula Dietz also place a 4-foot tree on a platform in the middle of a lake in the backyard of their Springfield Township home. Frank gets the tree to its location by paddle boat, while Paula watches from their deck to make sure it’s standing straight. The lights operate on a timer.

The coat distribution was made possible through the PNC Foundation, United Way of Mercer County and Operation Warm, whose sole mission is to provide new winter coats to children in need.

Children in the Mahoning County Head Start program received 55 brand-new winter coats through the efforts and donations of the Boardman Rotary. The third annual giveaway was organized by Rotary member Ryan Cuffle. Using creative shopping techniques, Cuffle was able to stretch the initial investment to provide an additional 25 coats.  Rotarians and Boardman High School Interact members delivered the coats to various Head Start locations throughout the county. Cuffle, far right, is shown with McCartney Road Learning Center staff, left to right: Georgetta Madison, Donna Wynn, Chrystal Wurm, Michelle Shafer, Evelyn Torres and Nichelle Moore.

Members of the Youngstown Lions Club recently donated gently worn coats to Goodwill Industries. Club member Doug Lewis, right, is feeling a little like “Santa” as he makes a delivery to Tom Sullivan.
