School system upgraded: Youngstown Schools Superintendent Dr. Connie Hathorn, the honored guest at the April 11 meeting of Austintown Rotary Club, discussed his revitalization plan to restructure the district. He said middle school students will encompass two sixth-and seventh-grade academies at Volney and Wilson, and P. Ross Berry will become an eighth- and ninth-grade academy. Interviews and/or auditions will be required for acceptance for the visual performing arts program and for acceptance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. Hathorn, center, is thanked for his enlightening talk by Susan Leetch, Rotary president, and Jerry Haber, program chairman.

Dressed to help: Students at St. Patrick Elementary School, 38 E. Water St., Hubbard, held a dress down day recently to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The youngsters proved they care about those in need around the world by collecting $200 to be used by Catholic Charities to help victims of the disaster. Sporting the casual clothing they had the privilege of wearing to school after contributing to the fund are second-grade students, from left, Daniel Rosser, Claire Riffle, Robert Mild and Olivia Robinson.
