A prisoner housing unit is empty at the county’s minimum-security misdemeanor jail in downtown Youngstown. Mahoning County Sheriff Randall A. Wellington proposes to close that jail as an overnight facility.  The closing results from revenue projections for 2010 that fall far short of projections. The sheriff’s department is expected to lose between $4 million and $5.7 million this year.

Students from Harding Elementary School on Youngstown’s North Side were guests of the Youngstown Rotary Club at a March 3 luncheon at the Youngstown Club. Among those enjoying the fellowship while participating in the event are, from left, Timothy Lipscomb, a Harding student, and Rotarian Roy Passarelli. Club members serve as mentors to the Harding students, helping with school work and teaching them how to follow their dreams and become productive adults.

Salem Preservation Society met on Feb. 4 at Salem Historical Society to celebrate the founding of the organization. To mark the occasion, the birthday cake displayed by, from left, Karen Carter, vice president, and Craig Brown, president, was shared by members during the social hour. The guest speaker was George W.S. Hayes, who spoke on the Salem Sustainable Comprehensive Plan. The club is continuing the sale of Carriage House Books for $22. On March 4 Mary Wilson of Austintown, at right, who is known as “Buckeye Grandma,” not only celebrated her 91st birthday, but also celebrated the fact that she is a great-grandmother for the first time. Joining her at the celebration are, from left, Diana Short of Sandusky, a grandma for the first time; Kimberly Deming of Sandusky, a first-time mother; and her daughter, Emily Marie Deming, who completes the fourth generation picture. Wilson is an active senior citizen who walks, drives her car and uses a computer for games, e-mails and business transactions.

The birthday of Dr. Seuss, who was born in 1904 in Springfield, Mass., was celebrated on March 3 by the children in Mellony Leonard’s second grade class at St. Patrick School in Hubbard. Taking a cue from one of the author’s best-loved books, the young pupils wore the “Cat in the Hat” hats they made for the occasion. They also participated in a variety of activities and listened as the story of “The Cat in the Hat” was read by their teacher.
