DECORATED: In preparation for the annual Christmas open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., Niles, Nancy Malone places one of the seasonal decorations on a Christmas tree. In addition to the tree and other holiday decorations, thousands of items will be displayed in the 14 rooms at the museum. Admission will be a donation of $5, with children under 12 admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

IN MOTION: Members of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s board of directors are preparing for Holiday in Motion, which will take place at the Arms Family Museum of Local History. The event will begin with a preview party on Friday and a grand opening weekend Dec. 5 and 6 with $1 admission. Hours on Dec. 5 will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Dec. 6, from 1-5 p.m. The display continues throughout December with regular museum hours and admission. endangered: At a recent meeting of the Youngstown Rotary Club, the program focused on the Ohio Social Law, which was designed to protect young people from underage drinking. The speaker was Sam Landry, above with his wife. He provided information about youth alcoholism in Northeast Ohio. According to the speaker, more than 40 percent of underage drinkers in the nation were provided alcohol by parents or other adults. He stressed the need for amending the Ohio Social Law, and he asked club members to contact state politicians and request that they pass the new bill of Ohio Code Section 4301.69.

CLASS ACT: The student council at St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Austintown conducted a food drive from Nov. 9 to Nov. 20 as a benefit for the less fortunate in this time of economic hardship. Students took nonperishable items or $1 to a drop-off near the school office. Displaying some of the donations are student council members, are, from left, Wesley Pringle, seventh grade, treasurer; Anny Carroll, eighth grade, president; Maddie Sanders, seventh grade, vice president; AnnaMaria Jadue, eighth grade, secretary; and Sharon Machuga, their adviser, who helped organize the food drive. The donations will be distributed on Tuesday to school families and St. Vincent de Paul.
