PATRICK JOSEPH UNGARO
PATRICK JOSEPH UNGARO

YOUNGSTOWN – Patrick Joseph Ungaro, 78, passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side, on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019.

Patrick was born March 3, 1941, in Youngstown, to Victor and Mary (Mast) Ungaro and grew up in the Smokey Hollow section of Youngstown.

He graduated from The Rayen School in 1959 and attended Youngstown College, where he played football and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. He received his master’s degree in Counseling, Administration and Superintendent Certification from Westminster College and served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis.

Pat began his professional career in 1965 as a teacher and school counselor at Rayen where he would also begin coaching football and track and field. Pat was eventually named the Head Football Coach at Rayen, leading some of the most successful teams in Rayen history. He then left Rayen and coaching to become the Assistant Principal at South High School until 1984. It was during these years spent in education that Pat had the most pleasure and reward, helping countless kids from Youngstown reach their potential and go on to become productive people. Many of his former students still approach his family crediting his calm, compassionate demeanor, firm discipline and most of all his genuine care for them as people as credit for their success to this day.

Pat ran for Youngstown City Council in 1976 at the urging and support of his wife to make a difference in the Third Ward. He was elected and eventually became Council President the following year, serving in that capacity until 1982. In 1983, Pat ran for Mayor of Youngstown, during turbulent times and won the first of five terms, serving as mayor for 14 years. He often credited his win to walking door to door every day during the election in the city; always remembering the number of great people he had the opportunity to meet; people who would help him become elected and who he would eventually serve with humility and integrity. He often said that hard work, perseverance and being honest in your dealing with people will always pay off. This working-class ethos carried him to three additional terms as mayor, where he eventually retired 1997, serving as the longest tenured mayor in the history of the city.

Pat attempted retirement unsuccessfully and eventually returned to education, serving as the Assistant Principal at Youngstown City West Elementary in 2001. In 2002, he was approached by Liberty Township to become the Township Administrator, where he served until June of this year. Pat made many friends in Liberty Township and Trumbull County and was always grateful for the opportunity to serve Liberty until his final days.

Pat was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family and enjoyed many fun vacations to Ocean City, Md. for 40 years.

Above all else, Pat’s most successful run was his 51-year marriage to his wife, the former Theresa Filipowich, whom he married in 1968. Theresa was the love of his life and his partner and counsel during his journey as he navigated the many perils of his professional career and politics in Youngstown. The four biggest victories of Pat’s career were his four wonderful children and the nine grandchildren that they both adored, that called them Nana and Papa.

Pat leaves behind Eric (Nanette) Ungaro, Candice (James) Ungaro-Jones and Renee Ungaro, who still call the Youngstown area their home. Pat also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Gina and Carly Ungaro, Allyson, Gregory, Patrick, and James Jones, Theresa and Anthony Garono, Sean Ungaro, and Kristian Whetzel; two nieces, Lisa Kavanah and Mary (Mike) Kushner; three great-nephews, Aidan Kavanah, and Mike and Thomas Kushner; one great-niece, Kristina Kushner; and brother-in-law Jim (Paula) Filipowich.

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Mary, his son, Sean and his sister, Charlene (Sam) Vinion.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Patrick J. Ungaro Scholarship, c/o The YSU Foundation, 655 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44502, where a scholarship will be established in his name, to serve the students of the Youngstown City Schools and Liberty Local Schools, or the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Blvd., Youngstown, OH 44510.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Southern Care Hospice for their care and compassion during Patrick’s final days.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Edward’s Church, and again on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, at the church from 10 a.m. until noon prior to a noon Mass of Christian Burial with the Very Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.

Family and friends may visit the Book of Memories at www.rossifunerals.com to view this tribute and send condolences to Patrick’s family.

A story

“I told this story to a crowd of very grateful people who gathered to honor Pat. There were three clocks in City Hall. One was labelled "Gary Kubic"; it ran pretty much on time. The second clock was labelled "Ed Romero"; it ran a few minutes slow. The third clock was labelled "Pat Ungaro"; it had no hands! If you knew Pat, you understand this story. Pat gave me my start. He had faith in me. The process to reach my place in his Administration was not an easy task. But he never quit on me. He always emphasized to me that our purpose was to serve our citizens by listening to them and caring for their needs. A simple philosophy that is rarely practiced today. But the characteristic that I most fondly remember about Pat is his smile and his sense of humor. It complimented his toughness and he knew how to use it to motivate us. He loved truth and hated ignorance. In a sense he was my teacher. He taught me that all people should be treated with respect regardless of their station in life. It is a lesson that I tried to practice throughout my career in public service. Pat made me a better person and I will always be grateful for this gift that he gave to me. To Theresa and family, thank you for sharing Pat with us. He lives in our hearts and will not be forgotten. Love, Gary Kubic ”

A Tribute to My Friend Pat Ungaro

“ I’ve had the privilege and honor to have loved and admired Pat Ungaro for 34 years, from when I first became a Vienna Township Trustee and he was Mayor to our last days together as Administrator and Law Director at Liberty Township. A role model and mentor not only for public officials, but also for extraordinary men, educators, coaches, family patriarch and best friends. I got to spent many hours alone with him. As we experienced the lost of many mutual friends the past couple of years, we had many reflective discussions about serving in public office, the love of family and friends and our own mortality. What this man did for his community, family and friends is nothing short of monumental. As his health became an issue and I too was forced to slow down, we came to realize the toll a public life takes and the importance of family and friends and relationships being the only things of lasting value, worthy of a life well lived. In later years, perhaps not the force that in olden days moved heaven and earth, weakened by time and fate, we supported each other, still strong of will, with the temper of heroic hearts . I end by offering my sympathy and condolences to Pat’s Family and all who loved him. Let us take solace in knowing that Pat is now in the comfort of God’s embrace, in a home most worthy of his life’s journey, A life well lived. I pray that our Heavenly Father will assuage the grief of our bereavement and leave us only the memories of the loved and lost, and the pride we have in sharing in such an extraordinary Life. My friend Patrick Ungaro. R. I. P.”

Youngstown Loses One Of the Good Guys

“Having grown up in Youngstown and more importantly, on the "North Side" there is an irrevocable bond shard by we "Northsiders". We are extremely proud of the different neighborhoods, the unique eateries, the incredible architecture, the parks, the schools, the sports and the unique landscape. Pat Ungaro represented us and our city with integrity, honesty and humanity and as a result we wore our Norhtside Pride like a badge of Honor! Most sane people would have fled in terror of what he faced down day in and day out like a lion protecting his den of cubs. It's a rarity to find those qualities in people, much less in a politician. He was a man of honor and I am beyond grateful for his tireless years of service to our community and send heartfelt condolences to you Eric, and the rest of your family! I will always feel fortunate to have had the privilege to have known your Dad and to have been witness to his wicked sense of humor. Sincerely, Colleen Conroy”

A wonderful Man passed this way!

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Ungaro. He was so kind and compassionate to my children while at South High School! I remembered when I asked for his autograph when he announced he was running for Mayor. I knew he was going to win because, I was going to vote for him, plus with such a loving spirit he was bound to win. Although I live in the Columbus area for the past 21 years, I’ve often thought of my Friend. I know i’ll See him again when we all get to Heaven! God Bless the Ungaro Family!!!”

Support

“Dear Theresa and Family: We are keeping all of you in our Hearts and Prayers. Having known Mayor Ungaro, Pat, as a Friend, Neighbor, Teacher, Coach, and Mayor, words cannot adequately express our admiration, respect, and fondness for Pat. He was such a gentle Giant in every way. Pat had time to listen to everyone, never hurried or condescending. His humility and easy manner endeared him to all who met him. Let it suffice to say that as Mayor of Youngstown, Pat was the “Best.” That being said, it was easy to see that his Love of Theresa and his children was the most important Job of his life. They always came first, regardless of the situation he was in. They were truly the air that he breathed. We hope that your lifetime of warm and loving memories will sustain you during this sad time. We would like to close by saying Thank You for sharing this Good and Great Man with all of us. All our Love, Sherry & George McKelvey”

Condolences on the loss of a kind, caring man

“My sympathies to Pat’s family. He was a wonderful man of integrity and honesty. It was a pleasure to work with him at Rayen and South. When Patsy left the schools to enter government, he did so for the betterment of Youngstown and its citizens, not for any personal glory. He served the people well, always doing what he could to benefit them. He will be missed. May his memory be eternal. ”

Prayers to the Ungaro family

“Pat Ungaro showed the people of Youngstown that good wins, he fought for our city with strength, dignity and compassion. My father who is a republican told he voted for Mr. Ungaro every time because he was an honest caring man and That was enough for him and he trusted him to run out city. When a man leaves this world, he is remembered by his character and the ones he left behind, his son Eric carries on the tradition. When I go back to my youth and remember what was good about Youngstown it’s Pat Ungaro, rest in glory my good man, and bless the Ungaro family.”
