The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown hosted an event called What Does Local Government Do on April 23.
Kristen Olmi, the president of the group, said that this was the first time the organization hosted this event.
“County government effects everyone, but often times people don’t understand what the commissioners job is,” Olmi said.
She explained that the goal of the League of Women Voters is to encourage education and voter registration. The group is non partisan, and never endorses a candidate, though Olmi said they sometimes take stances on particular issues.
“Our focus is really about education and keeping the community informed,” Olmi said.
That is how, Olmi said, the idea for an event about educating the community on local government came up.
Representatives from Mahoning County attended the event, where community members could directly engage with them. County Commissioners Carol Rimedio-Righetti, David Ditzler and Anthony Traficanti were in attendance. Representatives from the county’s auditors office and the county dog warden Dianne Fry were also in attendance at the event.
Commissioner Rimedio-Righetti ran the event, having been a long time member of the League of Women Voters.
Community members gathered at the Poland library had the opportunity to ask any representatives in attendance about their positions. Topics included the sewage system, the new Dog Warden facility and the state the Mahoning County infrastructure.
“We wanted to give an update on what’s happening in Mahoning County so the voters can be informed,” Rimedio-Righetti said.
The League of Women voters host a variety of community events throughout the year.
