The annual Slavic Baking Competition will take place from 10 a.m. to noon June 8 at SMARTs, in the Ohio One Building, 25 E. Boardman St., with judging to begin at 1 p.m. Entries must be from nonprofessionals and presented at room temperature (nothing frozen, refrigerated or heated). Entries will be judged on taste, authenticity and presentation.
Any amateur bakers interested must submit a completed entry form and $5 nonrefundable entry fee, and a description of 75 words or less. Adopt-A-Palooza set for Sunday at Sweeney

Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC and Boardman Township Park will host the annual Adopt-A-Palooza adoption event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lariccia Family Bocce Pavilion, 375 Boardman-Poland Road. Each year, Adopt-A-Palooza helps find homes for shelter pets and raises awareness of pet rescues throughout the Mahoning Valley.
Dog, cat and small-animal rescues will be in attendance, along with pet-related vendors. The free, open-to-the-public event will feature music, food and demonstrations by local police organizations. Northeast Ohio Golf Classic Scramble

More than 100 volunteers and golfers are expected to tee off for a cause at the 2019 Northeast Ohio Golf Classic Scramble, raising awareness and funds for the American Heart Association. Youngstown Country Club will host the annual event Monday. The four-person scramble style tournament will consist of 18-holes and begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Golfers will receive an 11:30 a.m. lunch, golf carts, refreshments on the course and hors d’oeuvres and an awards reception immediately after play.

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian man and Italian woman of the year. Nominees will be introduced at the opening of the festival at 5 p.m. Aug. 2, downtown. Medical Mutual names senior volunteers

Medical Mutual recently honored ten senior volunteers from the Mahoning Valley at its Outstanding Senior Volunteer Awards event that took place at Youngstown State University. The awards celebrate exemplary volunteers age 60 and older. This is the first year for awards in the Youngstown area.
The top four finalists were Diane Knepper, volunteer at Maplewoood Elementary School; Renee Maiorca, founder of the Summer Enrichment Program at the Life Enhancing Activities Program; Linda Romisher, longtime volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley; and John Paul Tolson, volunteer at the St. Paul School Foundation. Romisher was named top senior volunteer.
