Mooney to host annual Camp of Champions

YOUNGSTOWN

The DeBartolo-York, Stoops and Pelini families will host Cardinal Mooney’s Camp of Champions at Mooney’s Don Bucci Turf Field on June 13 and 14.

The football coaching brothers of Bob, Mark, Mike and Ron Stoops and Bo and Carl Pelini are expected to be in attendance. Mooney’s coaching staff, youth coaches and former NFL players like Bernie Kosar, Mike Tomczak, Greg Pruitt and Kyle McCarthy are also expected to participate. The camp is open to kids in grades 3-8. Howland’s Keller starts Atlantic 10 title game

BRONX, N.Y.

Dayton’s baseball team fell 4-3 to Fordham in 12 innings in the longest Atlantic 10 championship game in conference history. Dayton was playing in its first tournament since 2014.

Howland graduate Dylan Keller started the game and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up an unearned run, two walks and no hits. He had one wild pitch and hit a batter.

Dayton’s Cole Pletka walked a batter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th to end the game.

Westbay ends career at East Preliminary

Jacksonville, Fla.

Youngstown State senior Dom Westbay competed in the shot put on the final day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium.

Throwing in flight two, Westbay failed to record a mark after fouling on all three of his attempts.

Westbay ends his career at YSU as a Horizon League Outdoor champion in the discus. He also finished with the fourth best shot put mark in school history (17.75 meters) and fifth furthest discus throw (50.31) for the outdoor seasons.

Mezquida scores late to lift Rapids past Crew

COMMERCE CITY, Colo.

Nicolas Mezquida scored in the 89th minute to give the Colorado Rapids a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.

Mezquida corralled the Crew’s attempted clearance of Jack Price’s corner near the right side of the penalty arc and punched a right-footed shot into the upper left corner.

The Rapids (2-9-2) took a one-goal lead each time they scored. Tommy Smith opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a header to finish Price’s corner. Jonathan Lewis made it 2-1 in first-half stoppage time on a left-footed shot from the penalty area for his first goal with Colorado.

Pedro Santos tied it at 1 for the Crew (5-9-1) in the 28th minute, dribbling into the middle of the area and splitting a pair of defenders with a left-footed shot. Gyasi Zardes tied it again in the 54th minute with a close range finish of Federico Higuain’s diagonal cross.

Tyler Reddick powers to Xfinity race victory

CONCORD, N.C.

Tyler Reddick won the Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday after taking the lead for good on a restart with 15 laps to go.

The defending Xfinity champion led 110 of 200 laps to win for the second time this season and the second time in three races. He finished more than two seconds ahead of Justin Allgaier. Jeffrey Earnhardt was third, followed by Noah Gragson and Justin Haley.

Reddick, a 23-year-old in his first season with Richard Childress Racing, had eight consecutive top four finishes.

On a hot, humid afternoon where several competitors including lap leaders Christopher Bell and Brandon Jones were sliding into the wall, Reddick kept himself cool and collected.

Reddick moved in front for on the lap 72 and held on to win the second of three stages. He was ahead much of the final, 110-lap stretch and made it through several restarts.
